Generic Niacinamide Recipe for At Home Masks

Depending on what kind of skin you have (oily/sensitive/dry), decide what base you want to use for the niacinamide to go into.
You can use contact solution or purified water to start.
Most commercial serums and light lotions will do, however try to avoid products with high concentrations of vitamin C or AHA in it as it works on a different pH than niacin.

Purchase a bottle of high quality niacinamide capsules from either Vitacost (pharmaceutical grade oral supplement http://www.vitacost.com/NSI-Vitamin-B3-Niacinamide ) or from SkinActives.com (for cosmetic grade pure niacinamide)  http://www.skinactives.com/product/detail.aspx?prodID=73 )

The Vitacost is easier to work with and more convenient because it is in oral capsules that is easy to open, while the SkinActives one requires apparatus and care because it is pure and concentrated with no fillers.

This recipe is PER APPLICATION, so that each time you are applying, the active ingredients are FRESH.
It will not look pretty or clean, unless you vigorously blend it in the palm of your hands.

Use about 1-2 pea sized droplets of your base (serum, water, contact solution, etc).
Add 1/2 to 1 capsule of the Vitacost niacinamide or .5g (tiny sliver like 2 sesame seeds) of the SkinActives niacinamide to your liquid base.

If you want to make it into a mask, use the Vitacost version because it is cheaper and you can use up to 2 full capsules for your face.

RUB ALL OVER YOUR FACE or effected area.

Let sit for at least 30 minutes before rinsing or use a cream or sunscreen over it to blend it in if you prefer to have it on all day.

Please let me know how it goes.

  1. I tried the mask and it tingled, even stung a little which freaked me out so I washed it off quickly. Is this sensation natural? I just mixed a 500mg capsule of Niacinamide with a few drops of tap water…

  3. I got my niacinamide capsules today, and just slapped some on. I should have used water, in hindsight, instead of my Cetaphil moisturizer. It was handy, and I figured it’d be more pleasant to smooth on. But it just turned kind of sticky. Ah well.

Anyway, question: how effective is this for fading hyperpigmentation spots? My breakouts have calmed down, but the aftermath is pretty gnarly…I’m more concerned about that than I am about the actual zits. Bleh.

  4. Hey there!
I purchased the capsules from the source you suggested and got them today. I was anxious and excited to try your mask but also had the thought in the back of my mind that it wouldn’t be any different from anything else “out there” that I’ve tried.
    OMG!
My skin is soooooo soft and glowing! I found your site after doing an internet search for adult acne - which I have not found a decent remedy for. Till now! My skin feels so *relieved*
I can’t wait to try it on my Bachne tomoro!
    Lovenly,

  5. Hi Emmy,

Have fun! I do it at whim. If I have a day off, I’ll reapply the mask 2-3 times because I won’t be seeing anyone when I have my version of the mask on. It’s quite thick and cakey and it’s good to be close to a faucet when you’re tinkering with DIY cosmetics.

If you do it once a day your skin should be reflecting the effects after a week.

    Please keep me updated,
    Thanks!

  6. Hi, Skin Geek. I plan to try this as soon as I get the capsules. How often would you recommend doing this treatment?

I’ll let you know how it turns out.

    Thanks,
